Learning how to control depth of field and leverage it in your pictures is an essential step along the path from snapshooter to photographer.    By mastering depth of field in your photography you can reduce distracting backgrounds when needed or alternatively you can insure that all the items of interest in your image are in focus.

My passion is the outdoors and that is where I love to shoot.  A large part of my shooting involves wildlife and they are not always cooperative.  A big part of getting striking shots of wildlife is to eliminate the distractions often found in their environment.   Fortunately the long lenses that are typical in this kind of endeavor lend themselves to limited DOF and will naturally draw attention to the subject while nicely blurring the background to where it should be, in the background.
